Included Biomarkers
Prothrombin Time (PT)
Measures how long it takes blood to clot through the extrinsic pathway.
Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time (APTT)
Assesses the intrinsic clotting pathway.
International Normalised Ratio (INR)
Standardised version of PT, especially for patients on warfarin.
Common Reasons to Get a Coagulation Test
- To assess bleeding risk before medical procedures
PT and APTT help predict whether excessive bleeding may occur during surgery, dental work, or childbirth. - To monitor blood-thinning medication (anticoagulants)
INR is used to monitor warfarin or other anticoagulant therapy to ensure the dose is safe and effective. - To investigate unexplained bruising or prolonged bleeding
Clotting issues may not show outward symptoms but can cause heavy bleeding from minor injuries or during menstruation.
- To evaluate liver function or vitamin K status
Since clotting factors are produced in the liver and depend on vitamin K, abnormal clotting tests can signal underlying deficiencies or liver issues. - To screen for inherited or acquired clotting disorders
Conditions like haemophilia, von Willebrand disease, or antiphospholipid syndrome may be uncovered through clotting profile analysis. - To ensure safe management during pregnancy or fertility treatment
Blood clotting changes in pregnancy; testing helps reduce risks like miscarriage or thrombosis in high-risk individuals.
Popular Questions
FAQ list that we hope will help answer some of the more common queries
Do I need to stop taking my supplements or medications before the test?
No, you should not discontinue any of your current medications or supplements. Instead make sure to include your medication and supplement history in any questionnaires that may be included at Folacare clinic. If you have questions about a specific medication, please email info@iksanika.com and we’ll gladly answer any questions.
Is the Food Sensitivity test suitable for children?
At this time, we do not currently offer testing to minors because we aren’t able to irrefutably validate the guardianship of that minor. Folacare and our Doctor’s Network take these matters very seriously and as a result, we cannot offer our testing for anyone under the age of 18.
How long does the testing process take?
Once your blood sample is taken, your sample package will be securely couriered to our laboratory within 1-8 hours on business days or with 24-48 if samples taken on weekends. Once your sample reaches the lab, your results may be available online that day* and definitely within one/two business day.
How accurate are my results?
Folacare partners with some of the most prominent INAB-certified labs in the country that conduct specialty testing. These labs perform regular quality assurance testing and are the same labs many doctors, GPs and HSE hospitals use to perform their testing. If you want to find out more about their validation processes, please email us at info@iksanika.com
What is cut off age for taking blood sample?
You must be at least 16 years of age and under 75 years to give a blood sample.
